Located...

in the heart of the Southern Highlands of Scotland, Callwood Smiddy is set in peaceful rural surroundings in an area of outstanding natural beauty. 2.5 miles from the picturesque village of Kenmore on the shores of Loch Tay, the River Lyon flows quietly past the cottage on its way to join the Tay a few hundred yards downstream.

The area is perfect for a hillwalking holiday with Schiehallion and Ben Lawers just minutes away. The Tay is one of Scotland's finest salmon rivers, and numerous other outdoor activities (from white-water rafting to guided Highland safaris) are available in the locality.

Barely a couple of miles away is the picturesque village of Kenmore, where you can eat and drink at the renowned Kenmore Hotel (reputedly the oldest in Scotland). There are more excellent restaurants in the locality - notably Farleyer, the Weem Hotel, the Court Yard in Kenmore, The Fortingall Hotel and the Ailean Chraggan -  with several others offering 'Taste of Scotland' cuisine in nearby Pitlochry.

The small Highland town of Aberfeldy, 5 miles to the east, has supermarkets and plenty of interesting little shops, bars and restaurants, a sports and recreation centre with swimming pool, and an 18-hole golf course. There are also nearby 9-hole courses at Kenmore, Strathtay, Killin, Dunkeld and Comrie, with 18 holes at Pitlochry, Crieff, and - just 1 mile away - Taymouth Castle in its magnificent parkland setting.

Property Description

Callwood Smiddy was converted in 1998 from a former blacksmith's forge. Originally built in the mid-18th century it was used to shoe cattle, passing on the drovers road on their way to the markets at Stirling, Falkirk and the South. Last used as a working smithy some 50 years ago, it has been lovingly and creatively restored to form a private detached dwelling providing comfortable self-catering holiday accommodation for up to 4 adults.

Incorporating timbers and stone from the original interior, it comprises a tastefully furnished open-plan living & dining area with a high ceiling and a wood-burning stove. The kitchen area is equipped to a very high standard, with an electric oven and hob, washing machine, fridge and dishwasher. There is a TV and CD/radio/tape player; a freezer and tumble drier are housed in the adjacent outbuilding, which also provides safe storage for bikes, golf clubs, skis etc.

The two bedrooms, a twin and a double, are airy and imaginatively decorated. The lobby leading to the shower room opens out through double doors to a sunny south-facing patio, with garden furniture and barbecue, and views across the River Lyon to Drummond Hill. The entrance hall and front door lead to the large driveway with ample parking space. Heating throughout is by electric convector and storage heaters.
